“The Russian Book of Records " has awarded OAO RZD with a diploma for the creation of the most powerful mainline Gas turbine-electric locomotive working on liquefied natural gas.The Diploma of "Russian Book of Records" has confirmed the national and global value of this achievement.
On January 23, 2009 a gas turbine-electric locomotive GT1-001 (with a capacity of 8300 kw) pulled a 15,000 ton cargo train for the first time in history. The record was established on an experimental ring in Shcherbinka, Moscow Region.
The test showed the ability of the locomotive to provide the delivery of such a heavy and supersized train (159 wagons). No other modern locomotive can pull a train of such weight.
For reference:
The development of such a different and absolutely new to Russia locomotive began in December 2006 after the signing of an agreement for the joint creation of a gas turbine-electric locomotive by RZD and the Samara Scientific and Technical Complex named after N.D.Kuznetsov (SNÒÊ). By that time SNTK experts had already created an operating gas-turbine engine NK-361 and the power unit of the locomotive’s traction section.
The developer of the gas turbine-electric locomotive project was The All-Russian Research and Engineering Design Institute of Technology (ÂVNIKTI) (in Kolomna). The locomotive’s generator was developed at the Lysvensk Electrotechnical Plant. The pilot pre-production model of the locomotive was assembled at the Voronezh Locomotive Repair Plant.
A gas turbine-electric locomotive works on liquefied natural gas and it is intended to operate where railroads are not electrified.
