A Nice way to take the train

For Muscovites who hanker after the French Riviera, help is at hand. Direct trains are to run from Moscow to Nice starting this autumn, according to Pierre Blayot, director of French rail network SNCF.Direct shouldn't be confused with fast, of course. Even in the absence of connections travelling looking for a quick stroll along the Promenade des Anglais or an evening at the casinos of Monte Carlo will enjoy a leisurely tour of Europe, via Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy, according to the Voice of Russia.
There is already a train from Moscow to Paris, via Berlin, but Nice has had a special place in Russian holiday-makers’ hearts for a long time.
The town became popular with Russian aristocrats in the mid 19th, getting there, of course, by train. If you plan to jump on board in the autumn then you are following in the footsteps of Alexander II, who really got the Russian association with Nice underway. He took the train there in 1864, just after Nice was connected to the railway system, and by the end of the 19th century a large Russian community had congregated there.
Russians seeking spiritual solace can pay a visit to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral there. Nicholas II ordered its construction and it was consecrated in December 1912.
