Vladimir Yakunin Elected as Chairman of UIC

A conference of the General Assembly of the International Union of Railways (UIC) took place on Wednesday in Paris. Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways was appointed as Chairman of the UIC.

The previous UIC Chairman was Satoshi Seino of East Japan Railway Company (EJRC).

The term of powers of a chairperson of the UIC is 2 years, and it can be extended by 2 years. According to the Articles of the UIC, the position of the chairperson can be held by a head of a company – member of the Union.

At a press-conference today, the President of RZD told that in his opinion the main objectives are activation of work to form standards of railway companies’ performance, interaction with international organizations engaged in the issues of quality and technological safety, and formation of a common approach to the development of transport corridors, the press-service of RZD said in a press-release.
