06.09.2010 (16:47)

Russian natural gas giant Gazprom has signed a deal with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) to double purchases of Azeri gas to 2 billion cubic meters in 2011, the company said Friday.

Gazprom said its purchases were expected to exceed 2 billion cubic meters starting from 2012.

Previously Gazprom expected to buy up to 500 million cubic meters of Azeri gas in 2010 but subsequently the gas giant reached an agreement to buy 1 billion cubic meters.

The deal was signed during a visit by President Dmitry Medvedev to Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller called for expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan, as cited by Gazprom.

Azerbaijan has recently switched to exporting gas to Russia from importing Russian gas. Until 2007, Azerbaijan imported 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
