Belarus, Russia, Lithuania to increase cargo traffic via Kaliningrad and Klaipeda seaports

Belarus, Russia and Lithuania are considering the possibility to increase the cargo traffic via Kaliningrad Oblast’s seaports and the Klaipeda Seaport, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Railways press service.

The efficiency of the transport corridor of the three countries and the possibility to increase the cargo traffic via Kaliningrad Oblast’s seaports and the Klaipeda Seaport have been recently discussed by transport ministers of Belarus, Russia and Lithuania during a recent session in Moscow.

At the session the Belarusian delegation noted that this year it has no plans to raise tariffs on cargo traffic to the Kaliningrad region. Moreover, in H1 2010 Belarus reduced tariffs on shipment of iron ore (by 60%), methanol (by 74%), aluminium (by 62%), ammonia (by 65%), condensed gas (by 70%) from Kargala (Russia).

According to the Russian delegation, in January-May the Russian Railways transported 3 million 677 thousand tonnes of cargoes to the Kaliningrad Oblast, or up 49.6% over the same period of last year.

At the session, the Russian and Lithuanian delegations have agreed to consider the reduction of tariffs on the cargoes transported to the Kaliningrad Oblast via Lithuania, the transportation of cargoes on the Russian railways to the Klaipeda Seaport. The Russian side informed about the measures to develop the Baltiisk – Sassnitz ferry service and asked the Belarusian and Lithuanian partners to consider an opportunity to reduce tariffs on the cargoes transported to the Baltiisk and Klaipeda ferry complexes.
