RZD counts on stable purchase of modern locomotives

18.03.2010 (14:10)

Railway machine building sector is ready to produce modern facilities for Russian railways.

RZD’s Locomotive Purchase Programme to 2030 envisages the purchase of an equal amount of rolling stock annually. This stability is what the industry needs, considers David Kirzhner, Deputy Head of RZD’s Technical Policy Department.

In his words, 50% of locomotives’ breakdowns occur because of selectors, 30% - because of the producers, and 20% - because of the exploitation. That is why, in his opinion, the problem of the locomotive details quality should be solved as fast as possible.
Andrey Printsev, Head of RZD’s Technical Audit Centre, considers that the problem of the improper quality of new locomotives may be solved by competition development. Although, Mr Kirzhner thinks that this method does not always work in Russia. For example, propulsion engines for ÝÏ2Ê electric locomotives are produced by 5 plants, though the quality is the same.
