Russian President Dmitry Medvedev deems it necessary to check the state of facilities of the civilian and military infrastructure in the permafrost zone and in other areas with difficult climate.“There is a need to check the state of facilities of the civilian and military infrastructure in districts with difficult weather conditions and, if needed, to take measures to enhance their reliability in connection with the climate change,” the president said, reports Itar-Tass.
“According to assessments, degradation of permafrost in north of Western Siberia and in north-east of the European part of Russia can damage structures and communications,” Mr Medvedev noted.
At the Security Council meeting on Wednesday the head of state also mentioned other steps that must be taken to prevent the negative impact of the global climate change on national security. “We must create new financial and institutional mechanisms, envisage stimuli for technological modernization of enterprises and the system of reward to companies that engage in modernization and achieve significant results,” Medvedev said. He did not rule out the possibility of “adjusting building norms and technological regulations, taking into account the climate changes that go on or are expected.” “There is a need to be accurate in assessments, though, as not all forecasts come true,” the president said.
