European Commission may support South Stream

03.03.2010 (15:05)

The European Commission, - the EU executive body, may support the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, says the EU Commissioner for Energy Günter Ettinger.

According to him, the project could gain support on condition that it would meet all security requirements. South Stream provides for Russian natural gas transportation to Europe across the Black Seabed. Earlier the European Union favoured the Nabucco project, which would supply Europe with gas from Central Asia and the Caspian Sea region. But the economic expediency of the project has been called into question over a number of reasons, specifically Turkmenistan’s refusal to sign long-term agreements on gas purchases.
