Russia: Freight Transportation by Railway Fell by 22.7% in H1

In the first half of 2009, cargo transportation via Russian railway network reduced by 22.7%, said Vladimir Yakunin, President of OAO RZD, at the conference “Business Russia”, held today in Moscow.

“The figure speaks for itself”, he said, mentioning that the forecast for 2009 envisages a 19% decline in cargo transportation volume in 2009.

“Loading of only two cargoes is growing – export coal and export oil products,” stated Mr Yakunin.

In H1 of 2009, passenger transportation by railway fell by 12% (long-distance transportation reduced by 10%, and suburban – by 14%).
