28.05.2009 (11:38)

Russian Railways president Mr Vladimir Yakunin launched the start of work on Wednesday on parallel road and rail tunnels which will form part of a new 50km rail link from Adler to Krasnaya Polyana.

The line will open in 2013 and will be used to transport people to events for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games being staged in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. About Roubles 40 billion will be spent on the project this year.

Other works associated with the Winter Olympics include a new 2.8km line from Sochi Airport to Adler to carry up to 64,000 passengers a day from the airport via Adler to Sochi, doubling 30km of the 103km Adler-Tuapse line to eliminate most of the single-track sections, and upgrading of freight facilities for construction trains.
