Russia Posts Annual GDP

According to preliminary estimates, Russia's GDP amounted to some RUB 41.54 trillion (approx. USD 1.15 trillion) in current prices in 2008, the Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) reported today according to RBC.The figure rose 5.6 percent in real terms in 2008 compared to the year before, with the GDP deflator index at 118.8 percent. In comparison, Russia's GDP grew 8.1 percent in 2007 and 7.4 percent in 2006.
The following sectors of the Russian economy enjoyed a more rapid increase in gross value added in 2008 than in the previous year: construction (13.2 percent against 9.3 percent), transportation and communication (6.9 percent against 3.4 percent), agriculture and the timber sector (8.4 percent against 2.6 percent), mining (0.2 percent against a negative 2.6 percent), and power, gas, and water production and distribution (1.2 percent against a negative 0.7 percent). Other sectors saw a slowdown in gross value added growth in 2008.
