Deutsche Bahn said on Thursday it was buying as many as 180 short-haul trains from manufacturers including Siemens in an order worth as much as 430 million euros ($683 million).

How many trains the state-owned German rail operator actually buys will depend on whether it receives state funds for expanding its local network, the company said.

Deutsche Bahn, which plans to sell a 24.9 percent stake in its passenger transport, logistics and services businesses to private investors later this year, is increasingly in competition with private operators on short-haul routes, Reuters reports.
