Bulgarian authorities are currently developing two projects for the rehabilitation of the railway infrastructure in Sofia.

The first project that was initiated by the Ministry for Regional Development and Public Works includes the sale of 6 acres of land that used to belong to the former Pioneer railway station, Railway Market-CEE Review reports.

15 companies showed interest in the land located in the Baia Diana quarter of the Bulgarian capital, which is part of the assets of the national operator, BDZ. The starting price was set at 115.3 Leva (EUR 59 Million). The sale income will also go to the modernisation of the railway infrastructure.

The Bulgarian infrastructure manager is also involved in a project designed to modernise the Central Station in Sofia.

This project also includes the construction of a multi-functional complex on 1.4 acres, said Hristo Alexiev, Deputy Director of BDZ for the economic publication Sofia Echo. The project is part of an extended strategy that focuses on selling company properties. The strategy was made in collaboration with the Dutch government and the Dutch consultancy company AVD. The Bulgarian operator plans to extend the programme for other railway stations in the neighbouring country.
