15.05.2008 (16:34)
After the Russian transit was cut, the Port of Tallinn depends more on passenger carriage. However, the state owned Port of Tallinn feels endangered by Tallink that may establish its private port, Baltic Business News reports.
The Port of Tallinn is planning to sell the Port of Paljassaare and the management is afraid that the people connected with Estonia’s largest ferry operator Tallink may buy the wharfs. For example, one of the Tallink main owner Ain Hanschmidt company KS Holding planned a giant Manhattan-like real estate development in Paljassaare. That project includes also a port and a wharf for cruise boats, Eesti Ekspress writes.
Basically, the Tallink owners may establish a private port in Paljassaare if they buy it. This would help the ferry company to cut port fees. On the other hand, it would hurt already damaged Port of Tallinn’s income.
