New Beijing-Shanghai Railway Work Starts to Ease Capacity Crunch

12.05.2008 (10:07)

China started work on a new express railway between Beijing and Shanghai recently in a bid to ease passenger and cargo transportation pressure between the two metropolises, Xinhua reported.

The existing Beijing-Shanghai Railway, which is open to passenger and freight trains, is the busiest railway in China. A new railway between the two cities is necessary as the existing 1,463-kilometre railway is running at full capacity, the report said.

When the new express railway is completed, it will be for passenger trains only while the existing railway will be liberated for cargo trains only, satisfying the surging cargo transportation demand between the North and South, the report said.

The areas along the Beijing-Shanghai Railway are developed areas, which cover major eastern sea ports of Shanghai, Tianjin, Ningbo, Qingdao, Rizhao and Lianyungang, the report added.
