Throughput of Riga Port up 20.3% in Jan-Apr, 08

In January-April, 2008, the port of Riga increased its throughput by 20.3%, year-on-year, to 9.58 million tonnes.Transshipment of dry loose cargo was up 37.9%, year-on-year, to 6.3 million tonnes, general cargo down by 5.9%, year-on-year, to 1.64 million tonnes, liquid bulk cargo – down by 1.1%, year-on-year, to 1.61 million tonnes, PortNews reports.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 15 kilometres in length. Loading capacity (assessed) at the terminals of the Freeport of Riga accounts for 45 million tonnes per annum.
In 2007 the volume of the transshipped cargoes has reached 25.9 million tonnes – it is the highest index during all the 805 years of Riga port activities.
Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS.
