Swedish transport and logistics company, Green Cargo, is investing in new freight locomotives for operation along the cross-border route of Sweden-Denmark-Germany.Delivery of the locomotives will start in April 2009, eyefortransport.com reports.
The new locomotives will be operated by Railion Scandinavia, a new Denmark-based freight company that was formed last year by Green Cargo and Railion to serve the German-Denmark-Swedish transport corridor.
The aim of Railion Scandinavia is to streamline rail freight services between Scandinavia and Central Europe and to make them more efficient by providing seamless cross-border services by establishing a joint locomotive fleet. The creation of Railion Scandinavia is the result of an intensive co-operation between Railion and Green Cargo that started in 2006.
The joint venture provides Green Cargo with a competitive rail route to Central and Southern Europe.
Railion Scandinavia will operate single wagon transport services with high frequencies between the hubs of Malmö and Hamburg-Maschen. The joint venture will also provide wagonload and intermodal transport services on behalf of the owners with direct services between marshalling yards and terminals in Germany and Sweden. Railion Scandinavia will also have operational responsibility for rail freight services to, from and within Denmark.
Railion and Green Cargo are jointly investing in 23 new multi-frequency locomotives, which will be provided with train control systems and security certificates for all three countries, which will reduce the number of locomotive changes normally required at the borders.
