The President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin took part in the 68th Session of the General Assembly of the International Union of Railways (UIC) held in Montreal on June 6-9, 2006. There V. Yakunin noted that "this session of the General Assembly has become a major event, since it made the decision to accept Russian Railways as a fully-fledged member of the UIC". By the end of 2006, Russian Railways and the UIC plan to hold a series of joint technical consultations, during which they will agree on the conditions of Russian Railways’ membership. It is expected that Russian Railways will become a full member in summer 2007 As President of OAO RZD emphasized "so 58 years after Russia was involved in the foundation of the UIC and then withdrew, it has once again become a member of this authoritative and professional transportation organization. Russia’s entry to the UIC means that a single global railway organization has been formed, which represents a real step forward in bringing the Eastern and Western railways systems closer together. Russia’s membership will allow it to directly influence the formation of pan-European and global transportation policy and use its status of a full member to exert a positive influence on the integration processes in this area". This step could have a serious impact on Russian Railways functioning as a bridge between Europe and Asia, as cooperation with foreign transport systems will be smoother. Russia is interested in getting transit flow on the route Asia-Pacific region – Europe offering its transport capacities. Prospects of cooperation with China, Japan, and both Koreas is now being developed by OAO RZD specialists. In this row China plays a special role for Russia.A New Leader
