The economic recession has hardly touched federal and national projects for railway construction in the Russian Federation. RZD still carries out all serious projects, the construction and modernisation of which were announced recently. Thus, the mobility of people from the cities located in the western and central part of Russia will increase. Valentin Gapanovich, Senior Vice President, Chief Engineer of RZD, comments for The RZD-Partner International on the details of the projects.
Operators did not save the sector

Purchases of rolling stock by private operators in 2009 had to provide substantial support to the wagon-building sector. Ministry of Transport of Russian Federation worked out a forecast at the end of 2008, which said that in 2009 the number of cargo wagons purchased by private companies from Russian manufacturers could be about 50,000 units. Let’s compare: in 2008, independent private companies acquired almost 45,000 wagons. However, the difficult economic situation which hurt the industry in 2009 seriously changed the opportunities of the companies: purchasing numbers appeared to be only about 10,000 units.

In early February, a conference on investment climate problems took place in Moscow. It was chaired by Dmitry Medvedev, the RF President. The crisis had worsened the situation in the sector of investment in the Russian economy, summed up the conference participants. In the words of Mr Medvedev, if BRIC countries were compared, the situation in Russia was better than in Brazil but worse than in India or China.

On 29 January in Vienna, RZDstroy and Alpine Bau GmbH set up the joint venture Alpine-RZDstroy, with the participation of Vladimir Yakunin, RZD President, and Dietmar Aluta-Oltyan, Alpine Holding part owner and Supervisory Board Chairman.
